This time of year, we usually celebrate our founder's birthday - Nikki's birthday is Nov. 20!
From Nikki, "When I was diagnosed with cancer at age 17 in 2010, I realized that there were no or few programs to support teenagers with cancer. I learned that I was not alone feeling "left out" between the younger pediatric services and the adult programs. This is why I started my foundation! Teenagers need to feel supported and know they are not alone. Our bags have received rave reviews by teens, families and those who work in the hospitals. Some of the teens even tell us that they feel inspired by our bag and my story."
It's so great when we can put a smile on the face of a teen dealing with cancer! Our bags are very important to these teen patients who need support, inspiration, and positivity. Teenagers want independence and want to plan for their future. They look forward to being with friends, learning to drive, planning for college and/or jobs, going to sporting events, etc. Unfortunately, they are mature enough to understand the realization of a cancer diagnosis. They are very aware of the seriousness. They also don't want to stay closer to their families who have to care for them. They don't want to miss time with friends. They don't want to go to the many appointments, scans, hospital stays, etc. This is all extremely hard for a teenagers to adjust to.
It's so great when we can put a smile on the face of a teen dealing with cancer!
The need for our bags keeps growing. We've given our bags to almost 13,000 teenagers in ALL 50 states and DC!
Currently, our bags are in almost 210 hospitals!
Each bag costs us $90 and contains a variety of teen-specific items including:
knit beanie cap, Swell-style water bottle, $10 Amazon gift card, journal, adult coloring book and pencils,
playing cards, game book, stress ball, wireless ear buds, fuzzy socks and more!
We have never had paid staff, so our volunteers are very important. We depend on them to stuff all the bags, contact hospitals and more!
We also provide a two in-person events per year at Dave & Busters for teens with cancer and their families to attend in person.
We also deliver dinners to the pediatric/oncology unit at INOVA Children's Hospital at least 6 times a year.
Please listen to one of the teenagers who received our Teen Support Bag. She and her family are now very involved in Bite Me Cancer!
